Captain Salty operates out of Boise, Idaho. That's not a typo. Boise is about as far from the ocean as a person can get in the continental United States — and he wears that fact like a badge of honor.
Because here's the thing: the old merchant captains physically sailed the world to bring back rare ingredients. Months at sea, charting unknown waters, risking everything to source something extraordinary. Captain Salty is a modern-day spice trader, and in the modern age, you don't need a ship. You need scientific rigor and the will to go wherever the best ingredient lives.
Every ingredient in every Salty Zebra product is chosen by inquiry, not convenience. We read the science. We trace the supply chain. We ask the uncomfortable questions about origin, purity, and process. If it's the best, we go get it — from the science books to every port in the world. The landlocked bit is the joke. The sourcing is dead serious.
Chapter Two
The label is the promise.
Before The Salty Zebra Trading Co. existed, there was a problem: most electrolyte and salt products were built for a customer who doesn't read labels. Hidden "natural flavors." Synthetic acids disguised as simple additives. Ocean-harvested salt with real questions about what else might be in it. Proprietary blends that made it impossible to know what you were actually putting in your body.
We decided we were done with that approach. Every ingredient in every Salty Zebra product is listed on the label — completely, clearly, in plain language. No hiding behind blends. No stacking vague "natural" claims on top of unpronounceable additives. If we can't be proud of an ingredient, it doesn't go in the product.
A few non-negotiables that shaped everything:
No citric acid. Ever. Synthetic citric acid — the kind used in nearly every electrolyte drink on the market — is a mold-derived additive and a known trigger for people with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). We use freeze-dried lemon and malic acid instead. Not because it's easier. Because it's right.
Ancient salt. Not sea salt. Modern ocean-harvested salt carries real and legitimate concerns: microplastics, shellfish cross-contamination, and supply chain opacity. Our salt comes exclusively from ancient, deep-earth deposits — geologically sealed for millions of years before any of that was a problem. Pure electrolytes, traceable origin, zero modern contamination risk.
9-allergen free. Always. Every product is free of all 9 major allergens — including milk, eggs, almonds, and shrimp — and free of artificial flavors, artificial dyes, and gluten.
These aren't marketing claims. They're commitments baked into the formulation process before a single gram goes into production.

Why We Exist
We are the Zebras.
In medicine, there's a teaching principle that's been passed down for generations: "When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras." It means: look for the common explanation. Don't chase the rare diagnosis.
For millions of people living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), and related connective tissue conditions, that mindset has meant years — sometimes decades — without answers. Without a name for what they're experiencing. Without a doctor who believes them.
The zebra became the symbol of that community. The rare diagnosis. The one that takes too long to find. The patient who had to fight to be seen.
Many EDS and POTS patients require high-sodium diets just to maintain basic blood pressure and function. When we set out to build the cleanest, most transparent electrolyte product possible — this community was the reason. Every formulation decision, every ingredient choice, every label line was made with them in mind.
